Cruelty-free Toiletries – Our Top Picks!

by | Nov 11, 2017 | Blog |

While you likely think long and hard about the contents of the food items you put into your mouth, how much thought do you give to the products lining your bathroom shelves? Is your toothpaste vegan? Is your moisturiser cruelty-free? Is your deodorant natural? Are the ingredients sustainable?

Here we have compiled a list of some of the vegan toiletries’ brands that will be exhibiting at this year’s festival and discuss what ingredients their products contain, or more importantly what they DON’T contain!

Grants of Australia – (toothpaste and mouthwash)

Owned by the same parent company as Dr Bronner’s, the Grants of Australia Oral Care range is Certified Vegan by the Vegan Awareness Foundation. Their oral care range includes natural toothpaste and mouthwash. Their toothpaste comes in several flavours: fresh mint, mild mint, cinnamon, xylitol and blueberry burst for the kids.

Most mainstream toothpastes contain a list of toxic ingredients that are harmful to ingest and get absorbed into your body through your gums, even though you spit most of it out. This includes artificial sweeteners, dyes, colours and foaming agents. Natural toothpastes are just as good at protecting and cleaning your pearly whites without exposing you to nasty chemicals in the process. They use herbal and plant-based ingredients such as aloe vera and xylitol.

In addition to being available at local health food stores and independent supermarkets, Grants of Australia is the only vegan toothpaste that is easily available right across Australia at Coles supermarkets and selected Woolworths supermarkets.

Florence & Myrtle – (soaps and bath bombs)

Although Florence & Myrtle is predominantly known as an eco-luxe brand of hand-poured soy candles, they also offer a range of handmade artisan soaps and bath bombs in beautiful, exotic fragrances including ‘Spiced Orange Calendula’ and ‘Sandalwood Vanilla’. Their products are cruelty-free, palm-free, phthalate-free, sulphate-free, vegan-friendly and Australian-made. They preference local ingredients directly from the producer and are passionate about the environment, ensuring all their products are grey water safe.

The Australian Natural Soap Company (soap and shampoo)

These guys specialise in soaps and have all the soap-y bases covered – bar soaps, liquid soaps, face soaps, body soaps, sensitive soaps, solid shampoos, pet shampoo, natural laundry powder. Their products are all natural, palm oil free, detergent free, paraben free, cruelty free, biodegradable and vegan. They support Australian farmers and Australian manufacturing.

In addition to their soap speciality, they offer other products including eco-friendly soap tins and brushes, essential oils and fragrances.

Alex & Aloe (face and body products)

Alex and Aloe has a range of handmade face and body products including exfoliating scrubs, body butters and creams, face masks, cleansers and serums. They use vegan, cruelty-free, natural ingredients such as coffee, coconut, sea salt, activated charcoal and clay. There is even a men’s range with shaving foam, aftershave balm and beard oil!

Earthlette Pit Paste (deodorant)

Founder of Earthlette, Jemma Keeves, developed this product after developing an irritation from a store-bought deodorant.

“I started investigating natural alternatives. I was so happy with what I had developed and how effective it was, that I decided I had to share this with my friends and family.”

Earthlette Pit Paste is made with a unique blend of essential oils, included not only for their scent, but for their antibacterial and antimicrobial properties which assist in eliminating the body odour caused by sweat. Jemma explains that sweat itself does not smell and the bad odour is caused by bacteria on the skin’s surface interacting with fats and proteins in the sweat secretion. The 100% natural deodorant works by minimising the amount of bacteria in your armpit, therefore reducing the odour. Some of the other natural ingredients that this amazing smelling product contains are coconut oil, shea butter, arrowroot flour, clay powder and vitamin E.

Three Mamas (massage oils and insect repellents)

Made by mums, Three Mamas aims to make products that make it easier to decrease your chemical load. All their products are preservative free, aluminium free, additive free, fragrance free, cruelty free, vegan, unisex, Australian-made and use recyclable packaging.

They have a select range of products including:

  • Beautiful Skin Oil moisturiser that contains a blend of Certified Organic oils that are suitable for all skin types and everyday use.
  • Nourishing Massage Oil with Certified organic rosehip and jojoba oils. Available in 2 scents: cedar & spice or floral.
  • Insect Repellent, which smells great and works effectively. You can spray it on, use it in an oil burner or rub it on your skin.

All these wonderful brands will be showcasing their range at the World Vegan Day Melbourne festival, so you can stop by and test out their products…then stock up your bathroom with these vegan goodies!
